We had a wonderful Thanksgiving. My dad and step-mom Sherry came over for a yummy meal complete with a spiral ham, crock-pot mac and cheese, yams and other veggies. Dad went the extra mile and fixed boiled custard too! MaMa used to make this for our family every Thanksgiving and Christmas. What a treat!
Earlier in the day, Brian and I spent time brainstorming specific reasons we were thankful for Dad, Sherry, Zach and Sarah. We tried to mix it up with both serious and funny reasons — and with this family, it didn’t take long to come up with either. We wrote them down on little slips of paper and put them in tiny Thanksgiving bags with a “Why We Are Thankful For You” tag, which would later end up at each of their place settings. After we finished eating, each person took a turn drawing a “thankful reason” from their bag. It seemed to add a little extra meaningfulness to the day and it certainly added a lot of laughter. We may have started a new tradition!
I think one of grandmother’s favorite Christmas gifts I ever gave her was a mason jar full of these little slips of paper. On each one, I had written down a specific memory of our time together. No wonder it was full. There are some things money can’t buy. Our memories are one of them.
Great memories were made yesterday and no doubt they’ll be made again on Sunday when Megan and Brandon come for a visit. We can’t wait!
I hope you and yours had a very blessed Thanksgiving.
