Goldenrod
On roadsides,
in fall fields,
in rumpy bunches,
saffron and orange and pale gold,
in little towers,
soft as mash,
sneeze-bringers and seed-bearers,
full of bees sand yellow beads and perfect flowerlets
and orange butterflies.
I don’t suppose
much notice comes of it, except for honey,
and how it heartens the heart with its
blank blaze.
I don’t suppose anything loves it, except, perhaps,
the rocky voids
filled by its dumb dazzle.
For myself,
I was just passing by, when the wind flared
and the blossoms rustled,
and the glittering pandemonium
leaned on me.
I was just minding my own business
when I found myself on their straw hillsides,
citron and butter-colored,
and was happy, and why not?
Are not the difficult labors of our lives
full of dark hours?
And what has consciousness come to anyway, so far,
that is better than these light-filled bodies?
All day
on their airy backbones
they toss in the wind,
they bend as though it was natural and godly to bend,
they rise in a stiff sweetness,
in the pure peace of giving
one’s gold away.

DAY 3: BEAUTY
Look for wonder through a camera lens throughout the day. Carry a camera or your camera-equipped cell phone to snap photos of God’s beauty, grace, love, peace, and joy all around you. Share these beautiful moments of wonder with others.
Oh Cathy, goldenrod does a number on me! Ugh, I dread seeing it pop up, which leads me to my favorite line:
I don't suppose anything loves it, except, perhaps,
the rocky voids
filled by its dumb dazzle.
True 'dat. Hope you're having a great week!
You're hilarious, Susan! I actually thought of the same seeing how I get THREE shots a week for allergies. 🙂
I love that line too. Dumb dazzle. Sigh.
Good morning Cathy,
My favorite line:
they rise in a stiff sweetness,
in the pure peace of giving
one's gold away.
Since cancer treatment, I arise every morning in stiffness…and it is one of my prayers that in my interactions with others that they can feel God's peace in me…which is like gold.
Also, I chuckled when I read today's wonder–my hubby took up photography a few years back and since my love lies more with the written word, I didn't have much interest. Well, a month ago he finally convinced me to get a camera….and my world has opened up….
Blessings on your day!
Oh Kim, that's powerful and brings a fresh perspective to this poem.
I've not yet had the privilege of meeting you face to face but I assure you — your life exudes God's peace and His glory.
I'm blessed to call you friend. 🙂 Thank you for sharing. Wow.

I like all of the poem, but this portion makes me think of how in Jesus we also bend, rather than break, and stand in His purity and sweetness to give His gold away.
My camera's are always ready and eager to accompany me as I go out to search out His beauty in this world.
Betty Jo, I love this visual that you share about the bending and not breaking in Christ. Beautiful!
I enjoyed your site and hope others will visit too. What a blessing.
“And what has consciousness come to anyway, so far,

I often have this same question.
That is also my favorite line!
It’s hard to find a favorite where Mary is concerned. There are so many! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
