With the interior work just around the tiny bend, my abstract ideas need to harden like concrete.
For instance, there will be the eight-foot-long desk but we’ve not yet decided on the materials. There will be walls, but will they be planked or smooth? And the floors, will they be wood of a lighter or darker tone? These are just a few of the questions tapping on my brain when I’m all tapped out.
Pinterest is usually my go-to when searching for new ideas. But last week, while facing a stash of multi-layered eye candy otherwise known as magazines, I spotted two letters⏤Ti⏤peeking out from the left side of a Dwell Magazine. Could it be? Why yes, yes it could:
I rescued the latest issue of Tiny Homes magazine and later turned the pages one by one, hoping to gather ideas into my concrete bucket. Some corners received the coveted fold-over while others were pleasantly ignored.
Here are some of my favorite fold-overs for various reasons:
Any time I spot a tiny desk in front of a window, I take note. It seems like many are bar height, maybe because it doubles as a table for those who live in their tiny abode.
These window boxes make the colorful Rainbow Row-inspired siding pop. Let’s just say there may be a patch of pink flowers peering in my windows down the road.
I learned there’s a tiny house community only minutes from my house (now I know of two!) Yeah, that Greenville.
A garden, be it veggies or flowers, doesn’t require a lot of space to be productive. One day, Lord willing, there will be a garden filled with hollyhocks, foxgloves, and other vintage flowers framing the tiny house. But first, a long strand of free weekends await, something we’ve not enjoyed for over a year. (For more tiny garden ideas, visit my Pinterest boards!)
And finally, sometimes it’s not so much about finding what you want to put in your space, but what you don’t want…like, say, these antler rails. Make it stop.
When the interior work begins, watch for specific questions on Instagram. I look forward to your feedback!
But for now, just for fun…what’s your favorite magazine? Do tell!

Thank you for spending time at the Tiny House on the Hill today.
Good afternoon, Cathy,
What a journey!
And to know there is a community of like-minded tiny house enthusiasts close by!
I sense God’s blessing upon you and this space. I look forward to seeing how He works. I dont read any regular magazines. I dont have cable. Just little ole me today walking back from the library with my boys and a backpack full of videos and books. Have a beauty-full day. In Christ, Julie
Spending time in my library is a privilege I’ve not always appreciated as I should. Thank you for your kind words. I receive that blessing for God’s glory!
I love magazines! My favs (do I have to have just one…) are Southern Living, Taste of the South, Country Living and anything about log houses and barn homes!
Love this piece so much — you’re getting closer to your forever Tiny Home!
I love those too, Connie! I even love the British edition of Country Living. 🙂 Yes, getting closer. I’m trying to keep my eyes on the goal so I don’t get discouraged about the process. Your encouragement goes a long way. Blessings, friend!
Cathy,
So many choices! But the tiny house is coming along…great progress. I’m like Connie, I love magazines. Had to cut back on subscriptions and now get many from the library. Currently still subscribe to The Cottage Journal. And you’re right, they are a great place to get new ideas.
Thanks, Cynthia! My all-time favorite home magazine was Cottage Living but it’s no longer in print. 🙁 The Cottage Journal is a feast for the eyes. Thanks for taking the time to stop by! Blessings.
Hey Cathy! When your blog title had the word “Magazine” in it, I couldn’t click fast enough. As a magazine founder and editor in chief, I love a good style and story mag. My go-tos for style are Southern Lady, Southern Living, and browsing anything “farmhouse”. I’m very passionate about making spaces inviting and calming. I’ve loved following your progress with The Tiny House and can’t wait to see the finished product. May God honor your time and efforts of obedience in the tiny space with bigger-than-life adventures with Him for His glory.
Hi Melanie! I love that you’re following the progress of the tiny house. Thank you! The Southern mags you mentioned are also two of my faves, as well as American Farmhouse. And yes, honoring God in this tiny space is my heart’s desire. Thanks so much for taking the time to share. It’s encouraging to know I’m not alone on this journey. 🙂
LOL. “Antler railing. Make it stop!” indeed. My new magazine, and only magazine these days, is the HyVee grocery magazine. In my younger days, I longingly gazed through any architectural magazine published. Including Tiny homes. In the day, it was called, Not so Big House. I studied under Sarah Susanka at ISU as a visiting design instructor 13-15 years before her book came out. From Wikipedia: Sarah Susanka started the “counter movement” for smaller houses which she details in her book The Not So Big House (1997)
Patricia, I have only one question for you. Is there anything you don’t do? You’re incredibly talented! I’ve not heard of the HyVee grocery magazine. Now I’m intrigued. 🙂 Thanks so much for taking the time to share your fave. Blessings, friend!
Probably Southern Living. I love the recipes…
They’re hard to beat. I just came across Southern Living recipes I tore out of an old issue a while back. I started clipping the recipes and filing them away instead of keeping the entire magazine to save space. Now I have a file for recipes, garden ideas, and travel ideas! Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing, Jennifer. 🙂
So much to consider means decisions aplenty. THAT will be my prayer point for you in these next weeks, Friend. 😀 Favorite magazine? Not sure I have one at the moment.
I welcome the prayers, Sandra! Thank you!
My favorite creative magazines are all from Stampington – Bella Grace, In Her Studio, and Somerset Life! My favorite online magazine is Leading Hearts (and yes, full disclosure, I now write for them). But I devoured every issue long before I ever had an article published there!
I love Bella Grace and In Her Studio too! Congrats on the new writing opportunity for Leading Hearts. No surprise there. 🙂
I can’t wait to see how you decorate the inside! I envision shiplap painted white, accents of coral and teal/aqua… oh wait, that would be my dream tiny house! (But you can borrow it!) My favorite magazine is Our Wisconsin. I also love Mary Janes Farm and The Magnolia Journal.
I can’t wait to see how I decorate the inside! Ha! Your dream sounds a lot like mine. 🙂 Ooooh, yes! I forgot about Mary Janes Farm. So good! Thanks for stopping by, Josie. I really hope to see you at Blue Ridge next year!
How fun is this post! I’m hooked on Southern Living magazine – have subscribed for years.
Thanks, Candyce! So happy you stopped by. 🙂 Southern Living is definitely winning the “favorite” choice. Hope to see you here again. Blessings!
i love that desk in front of the window! who knew there were Tiny Homes magazines?! Thomas and I have been watching Tiny House Hunters and it’s interesting how unique each tiny house is to fit everything in! i love the door on yours!!
It’s amazing how efficient they’re building tiny houses. I love that show! Have you seen the *tiny* coffee shop in front of the tiny village on 101? It should be finished soon. The outdoor space around the tiny coffee house is nice. 🙂
Praying your Tiny Home becomes everything you dream of; and it becomes the birthplace of the most amazing and inspiring stories Ms. Cathy. God’s blessings ma’am.
Thanks so much! Praying for you tomorrow. 🙂
I dreamed for years of living in a tiny house but put it on the back burner. You’ve helped me resurrect that dream — or at least a form of it :). I’ll keep you posted, but for now, I need to get a copy of Tiny Homes magazine and start folding some pages!
Yes you do, Patti! 🙂 I’m excited for your new adventure and look forward to following your new journey as well. Thanks for sharing!
Oh my, but I don’t follow directions very well! What’s my favorite magazine? Hmmm . . . Readers’ Digest probably 🙂
Ha!!! No worries, Patti. It was just a fun question. I didn’t appreciate Readers Digest until I was in my 40’s. Great choice!
Hi Cathy,
Since I buy Southern Living & Victoria Magazines the most often, I’ll go with those. However, I’m tempted to try a Pioneer woman Magazine subscription. I’ve been re-doing my kitchen with her stuff and trying out her recipes.
I hope to get an invite when your tiny house is complete. I’d love to sit a spell.
Blessings,
Laurie Epps
I love all three of “your” magazines, Laurie! Of course, you’ll be invited to come sit a spell. 🙂
